Bollywood couple Aishwarya Rai-Abhishek Bachchan have shared screen multiple times. However, there was one film that makers regretted making as they suffered losses for 12 years.
The film is based on Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada and was focused on Tawaifs. The film starred Shabana Azmi, Sunil Shetty, Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in supporting roles.
Umrao Jaan was released in 2006 and the original Umrao Jaan was released in 1981. Rekha starrer film was a massive success at the box office.
But, Aishwarya and Abhishek's film suffered significant losses for the producers. Aishwarya and Abhishek's film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 15 crore.
Umrao Jaan was released on 3 November 2006 and managed to earn Rs 19.52 crore. But, did you know Aishwarya was not the first choice for the lead role?
Yes, you read that right! Priyanka Chopra was offered the role, but she refused to do. Umrao Jaan was directed by JP Dutta and said, “At one point, I had to make a decision. I wanted to work with Priyanka. I had envisioned her as Umrao Jaan.” However, Priyanka refused the film as her dates were already booked.
The makers were left disappointed and were unable to make any films for the next 12 years.
Dutta eventually returned in 2018 with Paltan, but the film failed miserably at the box office.
