L2 Empuraan the sequel of Lucifer becomes the biggest opening for an Indian film in 2025, beating Vicky Kaushal's Chaava. Amidst controversy, the film has grossed around US $17.3 million overseas.
Mohanlal and Prithiviraj starrer film L2: Empuraan is one of the most awaited sequels to Lucifer. The film has been winning hearts of people with its captivating storyline, powerful performance and brilliant direction that leaves viewers glued to the screen.
The action-thriller film is directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and is produced by Antony Perumbavoor and A Subaskaran. Along with Mohanlal and Prithiviraj, the film features Caroline Koziol, Rick Yune, Jerome Flynn, Andrea Tivadar and others.
L2 Empuraan has broken records to become the biggest opening for an Indian film in 2025 with its massive worldwide collection. The film has earned around Rs 165 crore (US $19.4 million) over its first four days.
L2: Empuraan's global success has been phenomenal. The film has dethroned Vicky Kaushal’s Chaava which previously held the record with US $19.1 million. Lucifer’s sequel has achieved an impressive milestone with an extraordinary collection.
The Malayalam film achieved this impressive feat with an overseas gross of $17.3 million and a remarkable $2.2 million contribution from the U.S. box office alone. The film's success has been credited to its adrenaline-fueled action sequences, gripping storyline, and stellar performances.
With its groundbreaking success, L2: Empuraan has not only shattered box office records but has also cemented Mohanlal's status as a global cinematic icon, further establishing the Lucifer franchise as a cultural touchstone in Indian cinema.
Despite its widespread acclaim, L2: Empuraan found itself embroiled in controversy in India, with some groups alleging that the film promoted an anti-Hindu agenda due to its depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response to the backlash, lead actor Mohanlal took to social media to issue a statement of apology.
Mohanlal said, “ I have come to know that some political and social themes that were included in the unveiling of Empuran, the second part of the Lucifer franchise, have caused considerable distress among many of my loved ones.As an artist, it is my duty to ensure that none of my films promote hatred towards any political movement, ideology, or religious group. Therefore, both I and the Empuran team express our sincere regret for the distress caused to my dear ones, and we all take responsibility for it, with the realization that such issues must be removed from the film.”
