Robert De Niro’s 29-year-old daughter, Airyn De Niro, has opened up like never before. In her very first interview after she came out as a trans woman, Airyn spoke to Them magazine to give fans an insight into the ups, the downs, and everything in between during her journey . Honestly, speaking it is as courages as it is heartfelt. "I wish people saw someone who is trying their hardest to heal from growing up not feeling good about themselves. (And) in the process of that, trying to make other people feel good about themselves," Airyn explained why she decided to talk about her journey.
For the unversed, Robert De Niro and his ex-partner Toukie Smith had welcomed twins Julian and Airyn in 1995. Even while the two were busy co-parenting, both Robert and Toukie had tried their best to ensure their children were protected from media. Airyn's identity was finally revealed when a paparazzi photo had surfaced.

In November 2024, Airyn had started her hormone therapy and she credited Black women including her mother, Laverne Cox, Raven-Symone and Halle Bailey to follow her journey. She said, stepping into this new identity, while she is also proud of her Blackness, makes her feel "closer to them in some way". "I think part of me is concerned that (my family) will maybe still think of me as the person I was before the transition," she had confessed during the recent chat. Airyn also talked about the "nepo baby" debate and explained she doesn't fit into that term.
"I wasn't brought up having a side part in one of Dad's movies or going to business meetings or attending premieres. My dad was very big on us finding our own sort of path," she said. As Airyn explained, there is a difference between being visible and being seen. "I've been visible. I don't think I've been seen yet," she stated.
During the recent chat, Airyn also explained that she is keen on continuing her studies even as she pursues her career in acting and modeling. "I'd want to hopefully be an inspiration for at least one other person like me who is Black, who is queer, who's not a size extra small," she added.
